Artist Residencies

Space for painters, musicians, writers, and makers

Hwinzo offers space for artists to rest, make, and think. It is not a blank canvas or a neutral venue waiting to be filled, but the living core of an active creative ecosystem connected to Libumba, a working ceramic studio, and the ALMA makers space.

A residency here means stepping into a physical environment where traditional craft, environmental stewardship, and daily life intersect. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean, coastal forest, and the rhythm of hands shaping clay, artists are given the rare gift of quiet space grounded in a community already engaged in the work of making.

What We Offer

Time — Uninterrupted weeks to rest, create, and follow your own rhythm.

Space — Access to studios, outdoor areas, forest paths, and workshop spaces across the property.

Context — A place shaped by Libumba, a working ceramic studio, and ALMA’s makers space.

Community — The possibility of exchange and collaboration with local artisans, makers, and musicians in Inhambane Province.

How to Apply

Residency places are awarded on a rolling basis. To apply, please send a brief description of your practice, what you hope to make or explore during your time at Hwinzo, and a link to examples of your existing work.

Turning Grounds

A three-week immersive residency bringing together visual artists Aurelien Petit (France) and Joao Roxo (Mozambique). Working directly on the property in collaboration with the Libumba ceramics workshop, the artists explored the intersection of traditional Mutamba clay with contemporary forms. The residency culminated in Turning Grounds, a dedicated exhibition hosted at the French Cultural Center in Maputo.

Outra Face do Mundo

A community-integrated art project led by Mozambican artist Chana de Sa in partnership with the ALMA coastal initiative. Hosted at Hwinzo, the project engaged local schoolchildren to transform collected coastal plastic waste into public art, resulting in the Outra Face do Mundo exhibition, a massive bottle-cap mural, and a sea turtle sculpture constructed entirely from discarded plastic bottles.

Cross-Continental Sound

A collaborative musical residency bridging Mozambique and South Sudan. Hwinzo hosted musicians Milton Gulli (Mozambique) and LUAL (South Sudan) for an intensive period of writing and recording. The collaboration produced an original recorded song, a music video shot on location, and a series of live concerts.

The Dugong

A large-scale environmental Hwinzo project designed to draw attention to the critically endangered marine megafauna of the Inhambane peninsula. We constructed a life-sized Dugong sculpture using a welded metal armature entirely covered in discarded flip-flops collected from the local beaches. The piece was displayed as a mascot during the national biodiversity exhibition and fair, and currently resides permanently at the ALMA makers space in Tofo.
